PR Folio Proposal

PR Folio Proposal               15/08/2012

Belinda Pratten                    Location Workshop 2          Proposal Due Date Week Four

Tasks

1. Make one group portraits using flash lighting.

Photograph a group of 6 people. This is a PR shoot of 6 executives/corporate people. Your job is to find an

outdoor or indoor location for the image, and make a group shot for their website and public relations (PR)

needs. Be creative, but think about this image as a corporate branding exercise for the “team”.

You cannot photograph fellow students. (Must use monoblocs).

2. Make three portraits, using flash lighting.

1. Standard corporate portrait/head shot with white (PLAIN!) background, photographed inside, on

location (not in the studio).

2. More creative corporate headshot or midshot, photographed inside. Simple background, and more

relaxed than the first shot.

They can be looking off camera talking to someone, gesturing etc or simply a tight more creative crop.

3. An environmental portrait of a person. Have them placed in a business setting, eg a winemaker

amongst barrels, lawyer with files, or small business owner showing elements of their business. The

environment around them must relate to their work, but not overtake the portrait. It is about the person.

NB: You cannot photograph fellow students.

My aim is to photograph the Kings Swim School Teaching Team.

For Portrait One – A PR group shot of 6 people

I want to get six teachers with the manager of their centre, and photograph them standing in front of the pool. I want to photograph with a slightly wider angle of view, so that you will be able to see the lanes of the swimming pool behind them, therefore the swimming lanes will create leading lines towards our subjects.

With the manager standing centre, most probably slightly side on with her managers shirt (a different colour to the rest to help stand out). She will be standing a step or two in front of the team with a professional but approachable stance. I will then evenly space out the remaining 5 teachers from her team around her in casual but professional stances.

For Portrait Two – A standard corporate headshot or midshot photographed inside on location on a white background.

I will photograph the ACT people services and training manager, I will use my white material backdrop with backdrop stands, and intend (but must confirm with the teachers) to use my flash studio kit to light her. I have done corporate head shots for this business just recently and intend to have in match another shot. See example below.

For Portrait Three – More creative corporate head shot.

I will take the manager, back from the first group shot and photograph her on her own in front of the pool, or in her office, at her computer. Possibly even dealing with a client, so the back of a clients head out of focus looking over their shoulder at her happy approachable self over the counter.

For Portrait Four – An environmental portrait of a person.

I would like to get again the manager, or a swimming coach with a professional stance, as they would when coaching the squad, with a short depth of field and the pool in the background. I am hoping to get a team of swimmers doing butterfly down the pool, to create large amounts of splash to blur out in the background.

Goldilocks task

In this task we were asked to use exposure compensation, where we worked out the correct exposure for the background (shot 1)
Then using an on camera flash over expose the subject (shot 2) to do this i set my flash to 1/1
Then using an on camera flash under expose the subject (shot 3) to do this i set my flash to around abouts its lowest power - with some adjustments to suit the location
Then using an on camera flash correctly expose the subject (shot 4) to do this i set my flash to around abouts its middle power - with some adjustments to suit the location

We had to do this task both outside and inside

The following shots were photographed at...
Shutter Speed 1/125
F. 4.5
ISO 100
Focal Length 50mm
Shot one, exposing the background with on camera flash

Shot Two, Over exposing the subject with on camera flash

Shot Three, Under exposing the subject with on camera flash,
because the subject did not have direct sunlight behind them, i had to stop down to get this result,
therefor we lost detail in the background therefore we moved to another outdoor location
but finished the correctly exposed shot first

Shot Four, Correctly exposing the subject with on camera flash

The following shots were photographed at...

I have just bought my speedlight triggers...
impact power sync
so with my flash, another flash and way to many helpers we played around with off camera flash, and the shadows and moods we could create.

One flash to camera left

one flash behind with one in front (with the power too high)

one flash behind to get rim light around models head, with the flash in front turned down

one flash behind to get rim light around models head, and one flash in front pointing towards models... creates very un flattering shadows around the nose

A funny one for Joel

Another funny one for joel...

Homework task,

Take a photo of a sunrise or sunset and compensate the foreground and background with front flash fill.

I took this photo a while ago, with my speedlight on camera, and have put this up for the moment until i can get a more recent shot.
Although this shot matches the description, i exposed for the background and added in fill for the wood post...

Location Task

Location Task
1. Produce four portraits.

2. To be completed this afternoon in class, at CIT Reid campus.

3. The emphasis is on the portrait and the background of the portrait.

4. Use direct flash for the first shot. Use flash bounced off the ceiling for the second portrait.

Use flash bounced off a coloured wall for the third portrait. Use flash bounced off a white wall

for the last portrait.

Think about composition and what is in your background. Are there distracting colours or

elements? Can you use some architecture to frame your person?

5. You can use fellow classmates as models.

this image, although terribly shot, was using direct flash...

this image was used bouncing the flash off a coloured wall...

this image was shot by bouncing the flash off a white wall

this image was shot by bouncing the flash from overhead.

Location Homework

Find an image using bounce flash and explain why you think bounce flash has been used

http://www.flickr.com/photos/26695058@N00/4388459997/this is a screen shot from this flickr webpage...

i think this shot has used bounce flash because, there are shadows underneath the nose indicating that the light has come from above and her catch lights are quite high in the eye, indicating that the flash was above the subject...
